Why it’s OK to give to homeless drug addicts

Is giving money to the homeless beneficial if they will spend it on drugs and alcohol? In his Guardian column Mark Johnson emphasises that giving money directly to the homeless is better than donating to charity, regardless of what the individual chooses to spend it on.
