NPS (Novel Psychoactive Substances) became a prison phenomenon, much more widely used on the inside than out. This was a distinctly peer-led consultation in nine prisons with nearly 700 prisoners, on behalf of NHS England, exploring how prisoners understood the phenomenon of former ‘legal highs’, such as spice, in prison.

The report hit all the major headlines including the The Guardian, Daily Mail, The Times and Buzzfeed, along with over 10 regional publications.

It was also used by NHS England to radically alter the focus of drug treatment services in prisons, through its Substance Misuse Treatment Service Specification, Public Health England’s New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) in prisons toolkit for prison staff and the Government’s Drug Strategy.
