Coping with covid in prison: the impact of the prisoner lockdown

Led by Mark Johnson and Professor Shadd Maruna, this report was the largest study of prisoners’ experience of lockdown. When no one was able to get into prisons, we recruited and trained 100 prisoners to survey 1,400 of their peers to understand their experience of life in prison during covid and explains the impact the pandemic had on prisoner mental health. The number of deaths from Covid — 195 prisoners — is trumpeted by policymakers as a great result of an extreme but unavoidable harshness. This report pulls back any denial or delusion to reveal the true effects of this regime on prisoners and, ultimately, on the public.
